Bridgewater stuns Marlins with overtime loss
BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater College's men's soccer Eagles nearly came as close as they could last year to recording their first victory ever over Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins.
The teams tied 1-1 in double overtime last year, but year later the Eagles accomplished the feat ... stunning the Marlins with a 2-1 overtime loss in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition on Saturday on the Bridgewater field.
Sawyer Janes (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) ended the game with a goal in the 96th minute, putting the ball into the net off a pass from Alex Utter (Centreville, Va./Westfield).
Utter was also responsible for helping the Eagles (4-7, 1-3) score first in the game, in the 25th minute. Ryan Tavernaris (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) came through with the shot that put Bridgewater on the scoreboard.
The host team carried that lead for most of the game, before Virginia Wesleyan (3-6-1, 1-2) came through to tie the score. Adam Stringer (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) scored in the 74th minute off a pass from Josh Christian (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge).
Virginia Wesleyan out-shot the Eagles 20-16, including 11-5 in the second half, but Bridgewater posted a 3-1 edge in the overtime period. VWC also posted a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
Ryan Zmuda (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) recorded one save in goal for the Marlins. Senior Jay Coble (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) also had a save for VWC. Tariq Martin (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) recorded six saves for Bridgewater.
The game at Bridgewater ended a challenging five-game road stretch for Virginia Wesleyan, which has played only two home games to date in 10 matches. The Marlins begin a three-game stay at home on Wednesday, Oct. 5, hosting the Quakers of Guilford College in ODAC play beginning at 7 p.m.
