#2 Captains Beat Panthers in USA South Opener, 1-0

FERRUM, Va. -- After a ten-day layoff, the second-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (7-0-1, 1-0-0) showed no signs of rust as they jumped all over Ferrum College (2-7-2, 0-1-0) in the USA South opener, winning 1-0 while outshooting the Panthers 25-3.

Junior Sean Moriarty (Yorktown, Va.) tallied the lone score of the contest on a free kick late in the game. In the 76th minute, Moriarty lined up the shot and put away his first goal of the season. It was one of 12 shots on-frame for the Captains in the game.

Ferrum threatened to tie with less than two minutes remaining on the clock after the Captains were called for a handball in the box, forcing a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe read the play, though, and dove to his right making a terrific save and kept the home team off the board. It was the only shot-on-goal in the game for the Panthers. Wolfe played the full 90 minutes to earn his fourth shutout this season.

CNU peppered the Ferrum goalkeeper David Gupta all day, taking 13 shots in the first half and 12 in the second stanza. The Captains were stopped seven times in the first half and four times in the second.

Winston Mattheisen and Jack Cooper each took five shots to lead the way for CNU, while rookie Jalon Brown had a team-high three shots on goal, four total in the game.

The Captains will return to action tomorrow at Averett University for a 1:00 pm kickoff in league action.
