Weekend Begins on a Sour Note for CLU

More news about: Cal Lutheran men's team

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A goal scored by Pomona-Pitzer in the 84th minute was the difference in Cal Lutheran's Saturday afternoon match as the Kingsmen were defeated by a final score of 1-0 in the first of back-to-back home games taking place at Mt. Clef Stadium this weekend.

Box Score: P-P 1, CLU 0 - F

Were it not for two shots that missed its intended target by inches, Cal Lutheran may have been the team to leave Mt. Clef Stadium victorious against the visiting Sagehens.

Looking to jump out to an early lead, Cal Lutheran nearly scored the game's first goal only 11 minutes into the match when sophomore midfielder Luis Santana successfully redirected a pass taken on a corner kick by junior midfielder Danny Kuntz that easily eluded the outstretched hands of Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Rollie Thayer.

Unfortunately for Santana and Kuntz, a Sagehens defender that was guarding the back post was able to sprint across the Pomona-Pitzer goal and make the save needed to preserve the scoreless tie, robbing Santana and Kuntz from what otherwise would have been their second goal and first assist of the season.

Originating from another corner kick, this one taken by sophomore midfielder Ivan Sanchez midway through the second half, Kingsmen midfielder Tyler Pascoe nearly gave his team the lead again on another header that Thayer had zero chance of saving or deflecting.

Instead of celebrating his first-ever goal scored as a Kingsmen, all the freshman could do was watch his header squarely hit the far post and ricochet back into the field of play.

Led by Pascoe and his four shots, seven different Kingsmen were responsible for the team's 14 shots taken against Pomona-Pitzer.

Cal Lutheran (1-8, 1-4 SCIAC) will complete its weekend against the Redlands Bulldogs (8-3, 5-0 SCIAC) Sunday afternoon, kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
