Second-Half Scoring Silences CLU's Momentum

More news about: Cal Lutheran men's team

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Three-second-half goals scored by Redlands within 16 minutes from one another were enough to create a deficit too large for Cal Lutheran to overcome as the visiting Bulldogs defeated the Kingsmen 4-0 Sunday afternoon.

Box Score: UR 4, CLU 0 - F

With both teams participating in their second game in as many days, it was the Bulldogs who were able to organize themselves on offense first, scoring the first goal of the afternoon just nine minutes into the match.

From that point on, the Cal Lutheran offense began to work as a cohesive unit, and was able to generate numerous scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the half.

Responsible for three of the Kingsmen's 10 shots, and two of his team's six shots on goal, junior forward Raul Yepez forced Bulldogs goalkeeper Andreas Silver to make the saves needed to preserve UR's one-goal advantage.

Trailing by one after the first 45 minute session, Cal Lutheran was able to pick up exactly where they left off prior to the break, and continued to attack the Bulldogs back-line.

Also finishing with three shots, all of which were on-goal, freshman midfielder Tyler Pascoe was the one Kingsmen able to consistently test Silver throughout the second half in his attempt to record CLU's equalizer.

But it was a goal scored by Redlands in the 64th minute that ended up being the ultimate difference in the match.

From the start of the second half until that moment, the Kingsmen simply out-hustled the Bulldogs, won a majority of 50/50 opportunities, and played a more aggressive style of soccer in comparison to their opponents.

Showing visible signs of frustration to the crowd at Mt. Clef Stadium throughout the first 20 minutes of the second half, it was Cal Lutheran that became frustrated once UR doubled its lead as the Kingsmen were now forced to reassign their personnel accordingly in an attempt to reduce their deficit back to one.

With CLU now looking to take additional chances on offense in an attempt to score its first goal of the match, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on the Kingsmen's aggressiveness and were able to score its final two goals eight minutes from one another off their counterattack.

Starting with Wednesday's 4:00 p.m. game at Occidental (2-7, 2-4 SCIAC), Cal Lutheran (1-9, 1-5 SCIAC) will play its next four games on the road before returning to Mt. Clef Stadium on Oct. 17.
