Dunbar Scores Twice as Men’s Soccer Routs NJCU

More news about: Stevens men's team

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 5, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team used a four-goal first half and a shutout performance by the defense to earn a 4-0 midweek victory over New Jersey City University on Wednesday night. Sophomore Stephen Dunbar scored the final two Stevens goals and junior Zach Adler assisted on the first two tallies for the Ducks. Stevens rises to 8-2 on the year while NJCU falls to 3-6-1.

The Gothic Knights actually had the first scoring opportunity of the night, as Walter Avans (Roselle Park, N.J.) was sprung for a pass that would have left him 1-on-1 with Stevens goalkeeper Paul Killian in the opening minutes. Killian raced out to the top of the box and was able to reach the ball right before Avans to squash the threat. After that point, it was all Ducks.

The team struck early, with Zach Adler assisting on the first two Duck goals. The first came directly off of a corner taken by Adler, as he struck a laser from the right side that found Pete Bednarsky streaking in toward the right post for a textbook corner kick goal at 8:20.

The second one was arguably the best-looking one of the night. Bednarsky lofted a pass from the midfield to Adler down on the left side. Adler took just one touch before dishing it to Victor Daza across the goal mouth to double the Stevens lead.

For the next score, Stephen Dunbar had a run in on the left side that allowed him to get off a perfect shot that ricocheted off the right post and in for goal number three at 21:37.

For the fourth and final goal, Zach Bowman lofted a pass that found Dunbar in alone with the keeper. Dunbar drilled a shot that was saved, but bounced right back to him. The Johns Creek, Ga. native was able to easily corral the rebound and put it away for the score. Stevens would go on to lead 4-0 at the break.

The second half began with Ethan Graham in goal for the Ducks. The senior was asked to make just one save to preserve the shutout, which he did. Freshman Quinn Connor also staged a nice defensive play in the box to prevent a good Knight scoring chance with eight minutes left in the second half.

The teams combined for eight shots in the second, with six taken by the home team…24 players checked in the game for Stevens…Wednesday night was the first game not decided by a single goal the Ducks have played this season.

Stevens will next travel to Elmira College on Saturday, October 8 for a 1 p.m. Empire 8 contest.
