Lebanon Valley Stymies Scranton, 1-0, in Men's Soccer Action
Lebanon Valley College junior midfielder Kelly Hess (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) scored in the 26th minute and the Dutchmen held The University of Scranton at bay to post a 1-0 victory in men's soccer action at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday night.
The Royals (3-5-3) controlled the action early, but Hess turned the tide when he picked up a loose ball and rifled a shot from 35 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal to give the Dutchmen (8-4) the lead.
Scranton applied plenty of pressure, outshooting Lebanon Valley, 15-12, but Dutchmen junior goalkeeper James Clements (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) made six saves, all in the second half. Senior midfielder Joseph Burbella (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) led Scranton with a team-high four shots.
Junior goalie James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made three saves in the defeat.
Lebanon Valley has now won two straight against Scranton, which holds a 5-4 lead in the all-time series between the schools.
Scranton returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field when Susquehanna University comes to town for a Landmark Conference match.
