Guilford hangs on for 2-0 win over VWC

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Breaks continue to elude the Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team.

The Marlins out-shot Guilford College's Quakers 21-17, held the edge in corner kicks 6-4, but still could not get the breaks in goals as the visitors from North Carolina posted a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Tuesday on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

It was the fourth consecutive loss and fifth in the last six games for VWC, which dropped to 3-7-1 overall and to 1-3 in the conference.  The Marlins, who played against Guilford without leading scorer John McKenzie (Virginia Beach/Landstown) due to an injury, have scored only five goals in their last seven outings.

Guilford (5-4-2, 2-2) produced both of its goals in the first half by being in the right places at the right times.  Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) scored the first goal in the 20th minute when he followed a ball past the defense to get off a shot into the left corner.

The Quakers added the second goal with one second remaining in the half when Chris Matteo (Millerton, N.Y./Webutuck) knocked the ball in through a scramble in front of the net.

Virginia Wesleyan had numerous scoring chances in the game, but could not finish off drives to the goal.

Peter Truitt (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) finished with five saves in goal for Guilford.  Jay Coble (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) recorded seven saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins compete again on Saturday, Oct. 8, hosting Washington & Lee University at 2 p.m. in the Homecoming game on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
