Mattheisen Nets First Career Hat Trick as #2 CNU Dominates Rutgers-Newark, 7-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked CNU men's soccer team surged past the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders (9-5-0) on Saturday, scoring a flurry of goals as the offense broke open for a 7-0 victory. The win was the largest of the year, led by senior Winston Mattheisen (Williamsburg, Va.) posting his first career hat trick.

CNU improved to 10-0-1 overall this season and remained unbeaten at home. The Captains wasted no time getting on the board as Mattheisen connected in the sixth minute of action for his seventh goal of the season. Off a free kick from Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) and a header pass across the goal from Brendan Cook (Williamsburg, Va.), Mattheisen powered the ball into the left side of the net.

He added a second goal in the 17th minute on a penalty kick, and Lybert scored his sixth goal of the year just three minutes later on a gorgeous free kick from the left side. The senior All-American midfielder had a tough angle outside on the box on the left side, but curved his shot into the far corner past the leaping goalkeeper.

In the 19th minute, reserve Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown, Va.) scored his third goal of the season off an assist from rookie defender Tommy O'Neal (Stafford, Va.). CNU took the 4-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders 14-4.

Mattheisen, the All-American senior forward, ranks second in CNU history in goals scored with 47, and third in scoring with 109 total points, but one thing the dynamic scorer had yet to accomplish in his career was a hat trick. That changed just 1:40 into the second half when Mattheisen connected on his third score of the day off an assist from Lybert.

The assist was Lybert's ninth of the year and 41st of his career, just shy of the Top 25 in NCAA Division III history.

Rutgers-Newark's best chance came in the 56th minute when senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe faced his third penalty kick in the last four games. Wolfe dove to his right and stopped the shot taken by leading scorer Daniel Naranjo.

CNU continued to pressure offensively, and scored two more goals in the second half for the final score, 7-0. Lybert scored his second goal of the game off a pretty heel flick assist from Steven Farmer (Poquoson, Va.) and junior Michael Breske (Blacksburg, Va.) scored his first goal from an assist by Bonorden.

The Captains ended up outshooting the Scarlet Raiders by a final tally of 31-7 including an 18-3 edge on-frame. Mattheisen led the attack for CNU taking 10 shots, including six on-goal. Joshua Alvarez came off the bench to lead the way for Rutgers-Newark with three shots.

Wolfe combined with junior goalkeeper Colin Whittington (Great Falls, Va.) to post the team's fifth shutout of the season.

The offensive outburst included the hat trick from Mattheisen, two goals and two assists from Lybert, and a goal and an assist from Bonorden.

The Captains will have their next game this Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 pm as they take on the 2010 USA South Conference Regular Season Champions N.C. Wesleyan.
