Heartbreakers continue as Marlins fall 1-0
VIRGINIA BEACH -- A snakebitten Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins men's soccer team took another fang in the fin Saturday falling 1-0 to Washington & Lee University's Generals in the Homecoming Game on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
It was the fifth one-goal loss of the season for the Marlins (3-8-1, 1-4), who matched the Generals (6-4-1, 3-2-1) in shots, 10-for-10, and posted a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not direct the ball into the net.
A vocal, overflow crowd watched VWC play an aggressive game that commanded possession of the ball, but the Generals dodged one bullet after another as Marlins shots missed the mark by inches on several advances in each half.
The only score of the game took place in the 24th minutes when Dave Phillips (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) found some space near the net on the left side and booted the ball into the upper corner to give the Generals a 1-0 lead that held up the remainder of the game.
Senior Ryan Zmuda (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) played in goal for the Marlins and recorded one save. Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) recorded five saves for W&L.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in ODAC competition at Randolph-Macon College at 4 p.m.
