Scranton Falls To No. 14 Swarthmore, 2-0, on Wednesday
Swarthmore College used a speedy front line and strong defensive play to post a 2-0 victory over The University of Scranton at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday afternoon in men's soccer action.
The Garnet, who entered the game ranked 14th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national rankings, received goals from junior defender John Pontillo (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at the 38:31 mark and senior midfielder Fabian Castro (Houston, Texas/Lamar) at the 56:43 mark. Swarthmore (10-2) then dodged a few bullets as the Scranton offense put forth good pressure late in the second half.
The Royals (4-6-3) received strong play off the bench from freshman midfielder Brandon Barrett (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) and freshman forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata), who both had chances to draw Scranton within a goal in the second half, but couldn't find the net.
Junior goalie James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made four saves for the Royals in the loss.
The all-time series between the schools is now tied, 2-2-3. The victory was the second straight for Swarthmore over Scranton, the previous win coming in 2005.
