Allegheny and Kenyon Play to Scoreless Tie

More news about: Allegheny men's team

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Allegheny and Kenyon College battled to a 0-0 tie Saturday night, on the Turf of Frank B. Fuhrer Field. What the game lacked in the score sheet, it more than made up for in quality play for both teams.

The Lords would come up with the games first real chance, as Andrew Parmelee would rip a shot destined for the back of the goal. That was until sophomore keeper John Lichina got just enough of the ball to slow it down for senior Matt Weintraub who cleared it off of Allegheny's goal line.

Moments later in the first half, Allegheny flexed their muscle as sophomore Alex Etherington played a beautiful ball into the Kenyon box that was foiled by Kenyon keeper Tyler Schatz. The last chance of the half would once again go to the Lords, as Parmelee would play a nice ball off a corner kick into the Alleghey box, but Lichina, as he has been all year, was there to save the day, punching the ball out and thwarting the Kenyon opportunity.

The second half started with Kenyon outshooting Allegheny 5-3, and being rewarded five corner kicks to the Gators two. Although the Lords held the edge on the stat sheet, the first half was very evenly played.

The Lords once again had the first chance in the second half, when Alistair Flynn came screaming down the near side alone; but Lichina, who performed brilliantly all night, played the angle beautifully and forced the shot wide of the goal. Kenyon would control possession for a good portion of the second half, but the Gators defense stood their ground as regulation would end with both teams scoreless.

The first overtime saw very little action, but one minute into overtime number two Allegheny came within inches of ending the game. A great cross would find itself on the head of Weintraub, who would push the ball just wide of the Kenyon goal. The Gators would continue to pressure in the second overtime, as a nicely played free kick from freshman Cameron Olson deflected off a Kenyon defenders head just to right of the goal. On the ensuing corner kick from Olson, junior Travis Tasker had Allegheny's last chance, with a great opportunity in front that just sailed high.

Lichina would make nine save in his sixth shutout of the season, and Weintraub would compile a team high four shots, as Allegheny would go to 10-3-1 overall, and 3-1-1 in NCAC play. Allegheny will take to the pitch next on Tuesday night, when they will host the Terriers of Hiram.
