Nichols Ends Albertus Magnus Winning Streak With 0-0 Draw

More news about: Nichols men's team

DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 17) – The Nichols men's soccer team halted Albertus Magnus' 12-match winning streak with a 0-0 double overtime draw on Monday night in a non-conference contest at Michael J. Vendetti Field. With the result, the Bison move to 9-4-2 on the season while the Falcons are now 13-2-1.

The senior duo of George Quireyns (Holbrook, Mass.) and Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) teamed up in net for Nichols while Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) was a mainstay between the pipes for Albertus Magnus. Quireyns was untested in the first half as Hamilton stopped a pair of shots in the final 20 minutes of his 65-minute shift and Piroscafo amassed four saves including one in each extra frame.

The Bison maintained a 13-8 edge in shots and 7-3 advantage on corner kicks while the Falcons led 4-2 in save opportunities.

With 2:25 left in the opening half Nichols' first-year Jonathan Silva (Framingham, Mass.) launched the ball just above Piroscafo who reached up and made the save. Piroscafo was called upon again in the 78th minute as sophomore Pat Gaumond (Holden, Mass.) connected on a chip shot that sailed over a swarm in front of the net.

Rookie Casey Doig (Spofford, N.H.) attempted to end the contest in the 92nd minute when he booted a ball inside the 18-yard box that was repelled by Piroscafo. Less than two minutes later the Falcons all-time leading scorer senior Jamal Howard (West Haven, Conn.) looked to put his team on top with his first shot on goal of the contest which was stopped by Hamilton.

In the second overtime, Gaumond and Howard each tried to lift their team to victory only to be thwarted by the stellar keeper play.

Both teams close out their respective conference schedules on Saturday. Nichols wraps up the regular season with a CCC match when Eastern Nazarene arrives on campus for a 2:30 p.m. contest. Albertus Magnus entertains Lasell for a GNAC tilt at 3:15 p.m.
