No. 2 CNU Drops Shenandoah in USA South Action, 4-0
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Steven Farmer scored twice in the first half to lead the second-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (13-0-1, 5-0-0) past Shenandoah University (2-10-1, 0-4-0) in USA South action, 4-0. The Captains cruised to the shutout win despite a torrential downpour for ten minutes of action in the second half.
CNU opened the scoring early, getting a goal just 4:58 into the game. Farmer got a pass from Brian Lybert into the six-yard box, where Farmer touched around a defender and the goalkeeper before taking a hard shot into the center of the goal. Then, less than ten minutes later, Farmer factored into the second score of the night, just missing a beautiful assist.
A long ball rolled by Farmer just outside the box, where he back-heeled a pass inside to Michael Breske. The junior transfer slammed a one-time shot right into the hands of SU keeper Anthony Light, but the rebound came right back to Breske, where he connected on his second attempt.
The Captains rounded out the first half scoring in under a minute and a half later, when Farmer scored his second goal of the game. The senior received a through pass from Lybert in the center of the field and lofted a arcing shot over the keeper.
Freshman Alec Faulkner added a late insurance goal, with under nine minutes to play, when he corralled junior Andrew Bonorden's rebound for his own shot.
CNU dominated the action all night, outshooting the Hornets 28-2, including 17 shots on-goal. Light made a career-high 12 saves for Shenandoah, but the Hornets offense did not manage a shot on-frame all night. The shutout was the eighth of the season for CNU and the seventh solo clean sheet for CNU keeper Justin Wolfe.
The Captains have just two regular season games remaining, with a non-conference home game next Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 pm. CNU will then travel to Greensboro for the regular season finale on Saturday, October 29.
