Catholic Stymies Scranton, 1-0, In Men's Soccer
Catholic University tightened the defensive clamps and used a first-half goal from sophomore midfielder Justin Oloriz (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Mater Dei) to slip past The University of Scranton, 1-0, in men's soccer action at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday afternoon.
The loss dealt a blow to the Royals' playoff hopes, dropping them to sixth place in the Landmark Conference standings, two points behind Susquehanna for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Royals need a victory over Juniata and a Susquehanna loss to Moravian next Saturday, October 29, to earn a playoff spot.
After Scranton had a couple of early scoring chances that didn't materialize, the Cardinals (11-4, 6-0 Landmark) broke through at the 24:39 mark when Orlizi buried a shot from 14 yards out on the left side after taking a pass from freshman midfielder Hunter Horvath (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll).
Scranton (5-8-3, 2-3-1) received continued strong midfield play from sophomore Colin McFadden (Ventnor City, N.J./St. Augustine Prep), who led the team with three shots. Senior midfielder Joseph Burbella (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and senior forward Nick Glavan (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both had solid games while playing in their final regular season games at Fitzpatrick Field.
Junior goalie James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made three saves in the defeat.
The victory pushed Catholic ahead in the all-time series against the Royals, 3-2-1.
Scranton returns to action for its final regular season game when it travels to Huntingdon, Pa. on Saturday, October 29 for a Landmark Conference match at Juniata at 1 p.m.
