Silvia & Costa Lead RIC to, 2-1, Double Overtime Win at Plymouth State

Plymouth, N.H.-After senior defender Troy Silvia (Bristol, RI) forced overtime with a goal in the 89th minute of play, senior forward Bruno Costa's (Pawtucket, RI) header in the 103rd minute of action propelled the Rhode Island College men's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Plymouth State in Little East Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.

RIC (9-7, 4-2) is currently tied with Keene State for second place in the Little East with one league remaining. The Anchormen, who came into the game with five straight shutouts over the Panthers (4-10, 2-4 LEC), improve their record to 10-0-2 in their last 12 matches against Plymouth State.

The teams played back and forth soccer the first 45 minutes, with neither team able to break through into the scoring column. Both goaltenders, RIC senior Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) and PSU junior Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden), made some excellent saves to keep all zeroes on the scoreboard.

PSU finally broke through in the 59th minute when senior Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan) collected a rebound and knocked home his fourth goal of the season. That started to like the game-winner as the clock counted down, but RIC had other ideas.  Sylvia pounced on a rebound in the box in the final two minutes, making his first goal of the season count, forcing overtime.

The Anchormen won the game in the second overtime when freshman defender Patrick LaRoche (Gardner, MA) sent a free kick from the left sideline into the box and Costa headed the ball past the keeper into the far corner for the golden goal, his fourth marker of the season.

RIC outshot the Panthers, 13-12, in the contest, but it was PSU who held the advantage in corner kicks, 11-6.

Clark (9-6) made five saves in net for RIC, while Ohlsson (4-7) stopped nine shots in the loss.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Johnson & Wales for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 26 (3:30 p.m.) before hosting Southern Maine in the regular season Little East finale on Saturday, Oct. 29 (1 p.m.).
