Manhattanville Sends Off Seniors in Style with 6-0 Win
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team defeated Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 6-0 at GoValiants.com Field with six different Valiants scoring goals.
Prior to the game the four graduating members of the 2011 squad were honored for their time with the Valiants' program. The seniors honored were Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden/LM Engstrom), Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/Victory Christian Academy), Adam Kent (London, England/Sutton Grammar), Emil Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Tyreso Gymnasium), Gerby Zelaya (Corona, N.Y./Flushing) as well as graduate students Chukwueloka Muoka (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Leadership Academy) and Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison).
The game started out in favor of the Valiants as they took the first three shots of the period, the third shot came after Old Westbury committed a foul allowing Kent to take a free kick opportunity that ended up in the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Manhattanville was awarded with a corner kick at the 17:56 mark of the first half take by Kent who sent it in softly to Carlryd who chipped it up into the goal mouth where it was headed in by junior defender Zack Weidner (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls).
A bevy of shots by George over the next nine minutes resulted in a goal as his third shot made it past Old Westbury goalkeeper Daniel Lazo for his ninth of the season off of a pass by Carlryd. The final 17 minutes of the period came to an end and it was halftime with the Valiants up 4-0.
After the break, George took a shot 3:24 into the period that hit the right post then bounced across the goal line and off the left post as the score remained 4-0. The Valiants got back in the goal column as junior Edmond Addison (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln (N.Y.)) notched his first of the year after taking a sharp angle shot from the near sideline off of a long pass from sophomore Kyle Cassidy (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel).
Less than four minutes later sophomore goalkeeper Zach Benton (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs) came in to relieve Torres and was tested right away as he stopped two point-blank shots that were stopped by the netminder. During the 76th minute the Olazabal brother connected on a goal as Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) scored his team-leading 24th of the year on an assist from his brother Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) for his team leading 11th assist.
In the 86th minute freshman Ezra Kauffman-Rogoff (Washington, D.C./Edmund Burke) took a rocket of a shot headed toward the top left corner of the goal that was headed away by a Panther defender for a team save.
About a minute later, freshman Yani Quinteros (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) passed the ball toward the right post of Lazo's crease where it was received by Zelaya. The senior dribbled the ball under the out-of-position goalkeeper for his first career goal on senior day.
Quinteros took one final header shot in the last 30 seconds of play that was stopped by Old Westbury and as time expired the Valiants had a 6-0 win.
In goal for the Valiants was Torres who collected his 12th win of the season while making two saves through the first 54:36. Playing in the final 35:24 was Benton who made a total of three saves. Picking up the loss was Lazo who falls to 0-1 as the converted midfielder made the start in goal for Old Westbury.
In terms of shots the home team outshot their opponents easily by a 34-7 margin, and a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were also well in favor of Manhattanville by an 11-2 count.
Manhattanville (14-3, 5-1 Freedom) will play in their final regular season game this Saturday when they take on conference rival King's (Pa.) in Wilkes-Barre, Pa at 7:00 p.m. Old Westbury finished their regular season with today's loss dropping their overall record to 6-10-1 overall while having a 5-3-1 record in the Skyline Conference.
