Gators Fall to Oberlin in Double Overtime

More news about: Allegheny men's team

OBERLIN, Ohio - Senior Matt Weintraub and sophomore Brian Graham each scored for the Gators, but it was not enough as Oberlin scored four minutes into the second overtime to give the Yeomen a 3-2 victory Wednesday night.

Allegheny would see itself down early, as Justin Griffiths would put the Yeomen up 1-0 in the 20 minute. The goal would serve as a wakeup call for the Gators, as they would settle down defensively, holding Oberlin to just two more shots in the opening stanza.

The offense would also start to get in a grove, as Allegheny would pepper the Oberlin keeper with shots in the final minutes of the half. Finally the equalizer came when Graham scored his fourth goal of the season off a cross from junior Tyler Danzey. The goal came with just one minute and eight seconds left in the half, as the teams would go into the locker room all knotted at one.

The second half would see each team raise the tempo offensively. Both goalkeepers were getting barraged with shots, and Allegheny would be the first to take advantage, as Weintraub would score a fantastic header off a cross from junior Chris Brennan, to give Allegheny its first lead of the contest.

The Gators would hold on to the 2-1 advantage until the last minute of play, when Oberlin would take advantage of an Allegheny miscue in the defensive end and tie the game with just 42 seconds left.

The Yeomen would put heavy pressure on the Gators back line in the first overtime, outshooting Allegheny 5-2. Sophomore John Lichina would come up big, making three big saves to keep the score even through 100 minutes. Unfortunately it would not be enough, as Oberlin's pressure would break through on a header by Ari Schwartz to give the Yeomen a one goal victory.

Oberlin would outshoot the Gators 26-19, and both keepers would make seven saves as Allegheny would fall to 11-5-1 overall, and 4-3-1 in NCAC play. Allegheny's final regular season game will see the travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on number six Ohio Wesleyan Saturday, October 29 at 7:00 pm.
