Pioneer men top Lions, 3-0
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Transylvania got goals from Tony Spero, Christian King, and Peter Mikhail Thursday and went on to a 3-0 win over Mt. St. Joseph in Heartland Conference men's soccer action.
The Pioneers continued their hold on the HCAC lead, moving to 10-4-3 overall, 7-0-1 in conference action. The Lions are 7-10, 5-3 HCAC. The win also marked head coach Brandon Bowman's 150th for his career. He is in his 10th season in charge of the Pioneers' men's soccer program. He has won 139 games at Transy and 11 at Elmira.
Spero's fourth goal of the year gave Transy a 1-0 halftime lead. He scored in the 21st minute off an assist by Stu Hampson. King's goal in the 64th minute made it 2-0.
Mikhail capped the scoring in the 86th minute.
Transy had 20 shots to 12 for Mt. St. Joseph, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Transy had six corners to none for the home team.
Taylor Nossokoff had four saves in goal to get the win for the Pioneers.
Transy completes regular season play on Saturday when it travels to Anderson for a 3 p.m. matchup. The HCAC semifinals will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Thomas Field with the finals set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The winner of the HCAC tournament receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Transy has played in six of the last eight tournaments, including the last two in a row.
