Men's Soccer Throttles Greensboro in Regular Season Finale, 7-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Winston Mattheisen moved into a tie with Oscar Gomez-Romero for the all-time scoring title at CNU as he helped the second-ranked Captains beat Greensboro College (4-5-5, 3-3-0) on the road today, 7-0. The Captains (15-0-1, 6-0-0) scored five times in the second half to run away with their 15th win of the season, wrapping up an undefeated USA South run in 2011.
With his goal in the 62nd minute, Mattheisen tallied his 113th career point, tied for the best all-time at CNU. He is also just two goals shy of tying the all-time best mark of 51 career goals set by Ian MacPherson. He scored the goal off an assist from the Captains all-time leader in helpers, Brian Lybert, who also chipped in a goal seven minutes later. Lybert has 11 goals and 11 assists on the year, for a team-high 33 points, tied for the 8th best season in school history.
CNU sophomore Caleb Lewis netted the eventual gamewinner in the 15th minute for his second score of the year. Senior Steven Farmer kept rolling, scoring his fourth goal in the last three games in the 28th minute to give CNU a 2-0 lead.
The Captains held the 2-0 advantage until halftime, putting 10 shots up in the first half while holding the Pride to just four.
Then, in the second half, CNU broke the game wide open with five scores. Mattheisen scored and then Lybert went back-to-back with Jack Cooper, scoring goals just 42 second apart. Cooper's tally was assisted by Andrew Bonorden. In the final ten minutes, the Captains tacked on two more scores when T.J. Byrd scored on a long, hard shot into the left side of the goal, and Brendan Cook got a cross from Cooper inside the six-yard box for the easy score.
CNU's offense enters the 2011 postseason firing on all cylinders, averaging nearly 4 1/2 goals per game in the last seven contests, running their win streak to season-high 11 games. The Captains outshot the Pride, 24-8, in the game, including a 12-5 advantage in shots on-goal.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe stopped all five shots he faced and earned his ninth shutout of the season. Wolfe now has 28 career shutouts, two shy of the program record.
CNU earns a first-round bye in the USA South Tournament and will not return to action until next Friday's USA South Tournament Semifinal at 5:00 pm in Martinsville, Va. The Captains will take on the winner of the #4/#5 first round matchup on Tuesday, between Greensboro College and Averett University. Stay tuned to CNUsports.com for more updates.
