Baldwin-Wallace Team Defeats Capital, 4-1, in OAC Men's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinals
BEREA, OHIO -- The third-seeded Baldwin-Wallace men's soccer team defeated sixth-seeded Capital University, 4-1, tonight (Monday, October 31, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match on the Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium. This was the second win of the season for B-W against Capital as the Yellow Jackets shut out the Crusaders, 3-0 on October 3.
With its win, B-W improves to 16-4 overall advances to play No.2-seed John Carroll University on Wednesday night in University Heights at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that match advances to Saturday's OAC Championship match. With its loss, Capital ends its regular season at 9-9-1 overall.
In tonight's other quarterfinal match, No. 5-seed Mount Union defeated No. 4 seed Wilmington, 1-0, at Charlie Gilhart Field in Wilmington. The Purple Raiders advance to play No. 1-seed Ohio Northern University on Wednesday afternoon in Ada at 2:00 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when senior midfielder Pete Childerson (Alliance) headed the ball into the back of the net off the free kick and assist from senior midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) at the 40:39 mark of the first half.
B-W added to its lead (2-0) when senior 3-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) took the long pass from junior midfielder Kirk Graf (Ashland) and hit a shot from the 18 over the Capital goal at 48:47 in the second half.
Capital cut into the lead (2-1) when senior forward Dan McCarthy (Centerville/Archbishop Alter) headed in the corner kick from junior defender Luke Froelich (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) at 59:29 mark.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead (3-1) when Vandendriessche scored his second goal of the game at 73:35. With his two goals, Vandendriessche now has 46 career goals and 10 assists for 100 career points.
B-W closed out the scoring (4-1) when freshman midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) took the pass from Thompson and placed it in the near post at the 79:42 mark.
In net for B-W, junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced three shots, allowed one goal and made two saves as he improved to 15-3 this season. For the Crusaders sophomore Bob Weisgarber (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) faced nine shots, allowed four goals and made five saves as he ends the season with a record of 9-9-1 to.
The Yellow Jackets won the battle of shots, 21-10, but Capital won the corner battle, 4-1.
The winner of the 2011 OAC Tournament receives the OAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
