Wong and Crevoiserat Push WPI to Key Shutout of MIT
Worcester, MA ---For the second consecutive game, freshman Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) tallied the only goal of the game in the second half and sophomore Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) posted a shutout to lift host WPI to a 1-0 victory. Saturday's heroics came in a key NEWMAC contest versus MIT that capped Homecoming Weekend in Worcester.
The victory pushes WPI's overall record to 7-1 and their conference mark to 2-0. The host Engineers are tied atop the NEWMAC standings with Springfield at six points. MIT is now 4-4 and 0-2 in NEWMAC action.
After a scoreless first half Crevoiserat took a feed from Shane Fagan (Middletown, RI) on the left side about 12 yards out and buried the shot toward the far post at 54:23. The marker was Crevoiserat's third in as many games and the helper was Fagan's first career point.
MIT staged a furious rally late in the contest and nearly tied the match but Tom Meagher (Acton, MA) deflected a shot following an errant clear attempt and Wong batted away a shot attempt to preserve the victory.
Wong recorded six saves en route to posting his third shutout of the season. He received a boost in the first half when freshman back Connor Bolton (Warwick, RI) cleared a ball off the line for the Engineers.
Dylan Rankin (Providence, RI) was credited with five stops for Cambridge's Engineers. The visitors enjoyed a 13-9 advantage in shots with 11 different players attempting a shot. MIT also had a 9-2 bulge in corner kicks.
WPI kicks off a three-game road trip Wednesday at Salve Regina at 7pm. MIT is off until next Saturday when its hosts Williams at 1pm.
