Men’s Soccer Captures Share of UAA Title With 2-0 Win at Chicago
Chicago, Ill., November 5, 2011 — The No. 18 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer captured a share of the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with a 2-0 win at the University of Chicago on Saturday in Chicago, Ill. The UAA title is the sixth in school history for the Bears, and first since 1999.
"We moved the ball well today and I thought eventually we took good tempo of the game," said 14th-year head coach Joe Clarke. "Last weekend was very disappointing, so the guys wanted to come out with the intensity this week and play as a group."
Case Western Reserve University picked up a share of the UAA Championship with a 5-2 conference mark, and gained the NCAA Division IIII Championship automatic based on the 2-1 overtime victory against Washington U. on Oct. 30.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead with six minutes before half after sophomore forward Jeremy Kirkwood netted his fifth goal of the year. Kirkwood, who missed the last two games with an injury, fired a shot from a tough angle that went into the upper corner. Chicago had a 7-5 shot advantage in the first half.
Washington U. (14-3-1) held onto a one-goal lead until the 72nd minute. Senior Cody Costakis sent a long ball over the top of the Chicago defense that freshman Pay Estakhri was on the end of for the insurance goal. Junior Brian Wright was credited with the assist on the goal for Estakhri, the second goal of his career.
Chicago outshot Washington U. 16-12, but Washington U. had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebsonmade four saves as he picked up his eighth shutout of the season. Jebson allowed 10 goals in 1615:55 minutes played in the regular season for a 0.56 goals against average.
The NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Selection Show will be streamed live on www.ncaa.com on Monday, Nov. 8, at Noon (CT). The Bears have made 19 NCAA Tournament appearances in school history, and last season advanced to the second round.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Chicago 24-8-1 in a series that dates back to 1960 … The two teams had gone to overtime the past four seasons.
