Washington U, Men’s Soccer Defeats Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-1 in NCAA First Round

St. Louis, Mo., November 10, 2011 — Senior Peter Jebson netted the game-winner in the 69th minute sending the No. 15 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team past the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship on Thursday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.

"I was proud of the boys as they played hard the entire game," said 15th-year head coach Joe Clarke. "Wisconsin-Whitewater played an outstanding game and their goalie played well and kept them in the game."

Junior Zach Query controlled a corner kick inside the 18, and sent a pass into the box that Jebson one-timed into the back of the corner to send the Bears' into the second round of the tournament for the second-straight season. The goal for Jebson was his second of the season.

Washington University, which improved to 15-3-1, advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to take on No. 5 ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday at 6 p.m., in Delaware, Ohio. Ohio Wesleyan has an 18-2 overall record and received a bye in the opening round. The Battling Bishops have an 11-2 record at home this season, and dropped a 4-2 decision at home to DePauw University in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship game on Nov. 5.

"We got unlucky last year and gave up a late goal and did not want that to happen this year," Query said. "We kept the pressure on in the second half and knew the goals would come."

Wisconsin-Whitewater (12-8), which was making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance, controlled play in the opening five minutes registering the first two shots of the game. Kevin Kron and Ryan Boyd each fired shots that sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebsonsmothered. Washington U. had possession the remaining 40 minutes of play and registered the final seven shots of the half.

Washington University was limited to just one shot on goal, but had 10 corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of play. UW-Whitewater junior goalkeeper Matt Mikesell's lone save was in the 42nd minute on a breakaway by senior Dylan Roman. The Bears outshot UW-Whitewater 7-2 in the first half and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Jeremy Kirkwood gave the Bears the 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on a give-and-go goal from senior Patrick McClean. The goal for Kirkwood was his sixth of the year. Wisconsin-Whitewater kept the pressure on and tied the score in the 61st minute following a goal by Logan Fye. A quick throw-in by the Warhawks landed on the foot of Austin Sarri, who sent a cross into the box that Fye buried into the upper 90. The goal for Fye was his ninth of the season.

Washington U. outshot UW-Whitewater 15-7 for the game, and had a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks. Jebson made three saves in goal and picked up his 15th win of the season.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. is 28-18-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament in 20 career appearances … The Bears and the Warhawks met for the first time in school history.
