Men’s Soccer Falls at No. 5 Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0, in NCAA Second Round
Delaware, Ohio, November 13, 2011 — The No. 15 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss at No. 5 Ohio Wesleyan University in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship on Sunday night in Delaware, Ohio.
Washington University ends its season with a 15-4-1 overall record, while Ohio Wesleyan improves to 19-2. The Battling Bishops take on No. 10 Ohio Northern University in the Sectional Semifinal on Friday, Nov. 18, at a site to be determined.
Despite playing into a stiff breeze, the Bishops held the edge in play during the first half, outshooting the Bears by a margin of 15-1. Senior Travis Wall freed Bryant on a breakaway in the 36th minute, but WUSTL sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson made the save while sliding across the goal line. Two minutes later, Dylan Stone ripped a shot into the right side of the goal for the game-winner. The goal for Stone was the ninth of the season.
Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to extend its lead in the 85th minute, when sophomore Nik Patel was assessed a yellow card for covering up a loose ball inside the penalty area, but Jebson guessed correctly and made a diving save on Matt Bonfini's penalty kick. Ohio Wesleyan outshot Washington U., 23-8, for the contest, while Jebson made seven saves.
Washington U. and Ohio Wesleyan renewed a rivalry on Sunday that saw the two teams play for the sixth time in school history in the NCAA Tournament, with Ohio Wesleyan winning for the first time.
