Guilford's Gomez and Page Land All-ODAC Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer coaches selected two Guilford College students to the 2011 all-league teams released Thursday. Junior Freddy Gomez earned First Team All-ODAC recognition for the second straight season, and becomes Guilford's fourth three-time All-ODAC pick. Classmate Richard Page garnered Second Team All-ODAC honors, becoming Guilford's eighth two-time All-ODAC pick after earning First Team All-ODAC recognition and ODAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2010.
Gomez, a 5-6 midfielder, started in 14 of 17 games and is second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with a career-high 11 goals. He also had one assist for 23 points on the season, the best mark on the squad. One of his best performances came in Guilford's Oct. 19 match against Hampden-Sydney College, when he buried two goals in Guilford's 3-2 road win over the Tigers. He also recorded two goals in Guilford's 3-0 victory over Emory University, scoring twice in the second half to seal the victory.
Through three seasons with the Quakers, Gomez has 30 career goals and 11 assists, the fourth and 11th-highest totals in the team's history, respectively. His 71 career points rank fourth at Guilford. He earned first-team honors for the second straight season after receiving Second Team All-ODAC recognition as a freshman.
Page, a 5-10 midfielder, recorded just one point on one assist this year, but was recognized by the league's coaches for his overall skill and playmaking ability. His lone assist, a perfectly placed ball that Gomez headed in, came in a 3-1 victory over Randolph-Macon College and gives him nine points in his 31-game Guilford career.
The pair helped sixth-year head coach Jeff Bateson's team to a 6-9-2 overall record (3-7 ODAC). Bateson expects as many as 23 letter winners back in 2011, including Gomez and Page.
