Tor Garners MVP Honors as Mavs Claim Oswego State Tournament Title
OSWEGO, NY - The Medaille College men's soccer team is yet to relinquish a goal this season as they blanked Oswego State (2-0) in the title game of the Lakers own tournament. Senior George Tor was named the tournament MVP while Greg Hoffman was named to the all tournament team for his strong defensive play.
The game opened with both teams pressing the tempo and it seemed that the Mavs would draw first blood when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Senior captain Kevin Dhillon would have his attempt pushed aside by the Oswego goalkeeper who also made another save on the rebound of the penalty kick.
However, Dhillon would exact a bit of revenge when he snuck a free kick past the keeper just minutes later to give the Mavs a (1-0) lead. They would carry that lead and momentum into halftime.
Midway through the second half the Mavs would strike again. This time Tor drew a trio of Laker defenders to him near midfield at which time he played a perfect ball to John Taggart who blistered home a shot to give Medaille a two goal edge.
The Mavs would hold onto that lead until the final whistle with both Dhillon and Hoffman playing major roles in that defensive stand. Senior keeper Nick Kurtz stopped all three shots that found the frame in earning his first shutout and victory of the season. The Mavericks depth was once again a strong contributing factor in the win as well.
The win pushes the Mavs to (2-0-0) as they head back to Buffalo where they will host Cortland State on Tuesday (9/4) at 6:00pm at All High Stadium.
