No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis Men’s Soccer Notches 1-0 Win Over Birmingham-Southern in Season Opener
Birmingham, Ala., Aug. 31, 2012 – The No. 21-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win at Birmingham-Southern College on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams in Birmingham.
Sophomore Chris Haeberle scored the first goal of his career in the 20th minute off an assist from senior Brian Wright to put the Bears on top 1-0. The Bears, who had five corner kicks in the first 12 minutes, controlled the match throughout the first half.
Washington U. held the Panthers to just one shot in the first half while the Bears had five shots, including two on goal. Birmingham-Southern out-shot the Bears 6-4 in the second period, but the Panthers managed just two shots on goal. Junior Jonathan Jebson played all 90 minutes in goal for Washington U., recording two saves in earning the shutout victory.
Washington University (1-0) will be back in action in Birmingham at Noon on Sunday, Sept. 2, against Sewanee University.
