Men's Soccer Opens Season with Draw
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Millsaps Men's Soccer Team got their season rolling as they took on the Fontbonne Griffins in the annual Greg Volgas Memorial Tournament in Memphis. The Majors showed many good signs against the Griffins on their way to a draw.
The first half started as an offensive struggle as each team held each another to only three shots with only one from the Griffins on target.
Fontbonne (0-0-1) got on the board first in the 54th minutes when Justin Williams found the back of the net to give the Griffins the early 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short lived as freshman Florian Popp picked up a lose corner and fired away his first goal of the season.
Millsaps (0-0-1) then responded with another goal two minutes later as freshman Lukas Elmhammer found junior Trey Fontaine who scored his first goal of the season to put the Majors on top 2-1.
However, the Griffins found an equalizer in the 82nd minute thanks to Josh Schulz to send the game into overtime.
Senior Stephen Andrieu came up big in the overtime period with a save and the Majors settled for a draw on opening day.
Fontaine led the way offensively with three shots on goal including his goal. Elmhammer added an assist and two shots.
Defensively, senior Taylor Harrison played well throughout the match as did most of the back four. Both Coach Johnson and Coach Voltz were also pleased with the effort from freshman Daniel Staursky.
The Majors are right back on the pitch tomorrow afternoon in Memphis as they take on Westminister at 2 p.m.
