No. 21 Washington University Men’s Soccer Tops Sewanee, 2-1 in Overtime

Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 2, 2012 – Freshman Connor Roach scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the eighth minute of the first overtime to give the No. 21-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Sewanee University on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham.

After a scoreless first half, Sewanee took the lead with a goal in the 51st minute following the Tigers' first corner kick of the match. The Bears answered eight minutes later when sophomore Chris Haeberle scored his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Jonathan Lipsey.

In the next four minutes, Sewanee fired three shots, but junior Jonathan Jebson recorded two saves and the Washington U. defense blocked the third to keep the score 1-1. The score remained tied through the end of regulation, forcing a 10-minute overtime. The Bears took advantage of a foul on Sewanee in the 98th minute as Roach kicked in the game-winning goal off a free-kick by junior Nik Patel.

Washington U. was out-shot 11-9 in the match, including 8-4 in the second half, but the Bears managed the only two shots during the overtime period. Jebson finished with three saves in the match to improve to 2-0 in goal this season.

Washington University (2-0) returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7, hosting No. 15 Loras College at 7:30 p.m. at Francis Field in St. Louis.
