Buena Vista Men Win 5-1 in Season Opener against MacMurray
Dylan Waugh (Lodi, Calif./Tokay) and Tyler Lafferty (Berwyn, Ill./St. Joseph) each turned in two goals, as the Buena Vista men's soccer team went on to top visiting MacMurray College to begin the 2012 season on Friday evening, 5-1.
Waugh put BVU in front 2-0 by scoring twice in the span of two minutes midway through the first half.
The Highlanders cut the lead in half with a goal of their own late in the half, but just four minutes into the second, Lafferty took a feed from Steve Gutschenritter (Pacific Junction, Iowa/Glenwood) for the first of his two second-half goals. He made it 4-1 only 15 minutes later when he found the back of the net after a knocking through a pass from Juan Andrade-Flores (Worthington, Minn./Worthington). Roland Pappoe (Accra, Ghana/Labone Senior) finished the scoring with only nine seconds left in the match off a pass from Eric Karita.
The five goals scored by the Beavers were the most the team had scored in a single game since blanking Waldorf College, 6-0, back in 2008. The team scored only 16 goals all of last season.
Melzdan Isakovic (Rijeka, Croatia/Urbandale) and Joey Stivers (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) each chimed in with assists, as BVU went on to out-shoot MacMurray, 20-8.
Michael Rydberg (Overland Park, Kan./Olathe East) notched a win in-goal in his collegiate debut, going the distance and allowing only one goal, while recording one save.
Buena Vista is 1-0 on the year and will host Northland College on Sunday to wrap up the BVU Classic. The two teams will square-off at 4:00pm inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
