Medaille Men Overcome 2 Goal Deficit; Score Late Game Winner at Oneonta State

More news about: Medaille men's team

ONEONTA, NY - After falling behind by 2 goals on two separate occassions, the Medaille men's soccer team was able to fight back and claim a (4-3) victory on a goal in the 89th minute to defeat Oneonta State, a 2011 Final Four participant.

The Mavs would fall behind early as the host Dragons would tally markers in the 26th and 33rd minutes respectively before an opportunistic goal by Anthony Saysay who capitalized on a botched clear by the Oneonta goalkeeper and the top left corner of the net for his first score of the season.

Just a few minutes later the hosts would regain their two goal advantage on a goal in the 41st minute.  They would carry that (3-1) lead into the half.

The second half would see a different Medaille team surface as they cut the lead in half just two minutes into play when Cory Carter netted his first of the year off a nice pass across the box from George Tor to make it a (3-2) game.

After 20 minutes of scoreless play the Mavs would knot the game at (3-3) when James Turner gathered in a loose ball and blistered a shot from 20 yards out which ricocheted off the goalkeepers hands and the post before finding the back of the net in the 68th minute.

Both teams would have opportunities as the clock wound towards (90:00), including a furious rally where Oneonta rattled off five straight shots but could not find the back of the net, the fourth and fifth shots of that rally were gobbled up by goalkeeper Nick Kurtz who came in at halftime in relief and led the Mavs to victory.

The Dragons seemed to have all of the momentum as they had a corner kick with (1:54) remaining in regulation but a foul on that sequence gave Medaille possession. The Mavs moved the ball down the field in a hurry, which then resulted in a loose ball at the top of the box which Cory Carter sent into the back of the net with one minute left on the clock.

Oneonta would gain possession and get a corner kick in the waning seconds, but to no avail as the buzzer sounded the scoreboard read: MEDAILLE - 4  |  ONEONTA STATE - 3.

The win keeps Medaille unbeaten at (4-0-0) and they will look to extend that win streak when they face Skidmore College at 4:00pm tomorrow (9/8) on day two of the Mayors Cup Tournament.
