McGuiness Helps Men's Soccer Stay Unbeaten With Win Over Marietta
Senior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored two goals as The University of Scranton men's soccer team stayed undefeated with a 3-0 victory over Marietta College on Friday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
Sophomore forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata) added a goal as the Royals improved to 3-0 for just the second time in the past 19 years. They also won their first three games in 2010; prior to that, Scranton hadn't won its first three games since 1993.
McGuiness capped an intense opening 15 minutes when he scored on a penalty kick after being taken down just inside the penalty box by a Marietta player. He stretched the Royals' lead to 2-0 when he blasted home a feed from freshman forward Ryan Smith (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) in the 39th minutes.
The two goals give McGuiness three on the year and seven for his career. The assist was the first of Smith's career.
Scranton kept the pressure on in the second half and eventually extended its lead when Kozic picked up a loose ball in the midfield area, dribbled up the right side and ripped home a shot from 18 yards out to cap the scoring. It was his second goal of the season.
Senior goalie James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) made three saves en route to his second shutout of the season and third of his career.
The Royals head a 17-5 advantage in shots against Marietta (1-2). They also held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
Scranton's game against St. John Fisher scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. has been canceled due to the threat of severe weather. The Royals will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when they host Ursinus at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
