Centenary (N.J.) Nips Seahawk Men's Soccer
St. Mary's City, Md. – For the third time this season, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team dropped a one-goal decision as the Seahawks suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss at the hands of Centenary (N.J.) College Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Seahawk Classic.
Bridgewater (Va.) College (3-1) claimed the 2012 Seahawk Classic title with its 2-1 victory over No. 12 Salisbury University (4-1) in the first game of today's Classic action. The Eagles finished with a 2-0 record.
First-year midfielder Abiodun Lawal (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) netted the game-winning goal nearly four minutes into the start of the second extra period to give Centenary (3-1) the win. Lawal collected a loose ball near the top of the penalty box and beat St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) to his right side.
Centenary (3-1) got on the scoreboard first as senior midfielder Alex Khouri (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) fired a rocket into the right side of the goal from about 25 yards out after receiving a pass from Lawal. The Cyclones carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
It looked like Centenary was on its way to a 1-0 victory as the visitors maintained their one-goal advantage. But in the 86th minute, senior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) tripped up the Cyclones as VanGessel corralled a pass from junior defender Shay Bromer (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) inside the box and found the lower right corner for the equalizer.
In the first 10-minute overtime stanza, St. Mary's (2-3) took two shots but first-year Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) stood his ground to force the second extra period.
St. Mary's edged Centenary, 15-14, in shots while corner kicks were even at three apiece.
Ramsland finished the game with eight stops while Goleman registered seven stops of his own.
St. Mary's hopes to turn around its losing skid on Wednesday, September 12 when the Seahawks travel to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
