Buena Vista Men Match Best Start in School History
Senior Eric Karita (Kigali-Rwanda/Olney Friends) scored his second goal of the year midway through the second half, and it proved to be the difference on Tuesday evening, as the Buena Vista men's soccer team picked up a big 2-1 road victory at Martin Luther College (1-3-0).
The Knights took the early 1-0 lead before the Beavers, who out-shot MLC in the first half, 10-5, pulled back even when Alex Chavez (Perry, Iowa/Perry) knocked through his first career goal late in the period off a feed from Matt Seniura (Grandville, Mich/Grandville).
Karita, who led all players with five shots in the match, scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half, and the defense held on from there.
Freshman Michael Rydberg (Overland Park, Kan./Olathe East) allowed just the one goal and tallied two saves, as the Beaver defense held the Knights to only three shots on goal.
As a team, BVU now has 18 goals on the year through the first five games, surpassing last year's total of 16. It's the team's highest single-season total since scoring 19 times back in 2008.
Buena Vista (4-0-1) matches its best start to a season since 2002. The program hasn't gone six games to start a season without a loss in its history. It will look to set that new mark when it travels to Hamline University (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon for a 4:00pm start.
