Medaille Men Remain Unbeaten with Win Over Brockport State
BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College men's soccer team stayed unbeaten and posted its fourth shutout in five games as they held on for a thrilling (1-0) victory over Brockport State this evening. The win marks the first time the Mavs have beaten the Golden Eagles in their history.
It was a nip and tuck affair that saw Medaille capitalize on a great chance off a free kick in the 37th minute when junior John L. Smith finished off a Kevin Dhillon offering from the top of the box to give the Mavs a one goal advantage. Little did the Mavs know that would end up being the game winner.
Both teams struggled to put balls on net as each managed just a pair of shots on goal with the Mavs managing to find the back of the net while Brockport was unable to break through. The play of the game happened on the defensive end when senior goalkeeper Nick Kurtz made a tremendous diving save of a penalty kick. The Golden Eagles were awarded the spot try with 20 minutes remaining in the game. Kurtz leapt to his left and got his fingertips on the ball and was able to push it wide, which inspired the crowd and rallied the team.
The Mavs hung on for the win and pushed their season starting win streak to five games as they are now (5-0-0) thus far in 2012. The Mavs have been impressive in reaching that mark as they have posted four shutouts and outscored their opponents (12-3) over that span. The Mavs have reached this point at the expense of the SUNYAC, having beaten all four of their in-state rivals that they have faced thus far this season (Oswego, Cortland, Oneonta, & Brockport).
The Mavs will look to stay on track when they face Birmingham Southern on Saturday (9/15) at 2:00pm as part of the Tomcat Men's Soccer Tournament hosted by Thiel College in Greenville, PA. The Mavs will face the host team on Sunday (9/16) at 2:00pm.
