Lichina Ties Shutout Record in Victory
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny men's soccer team continued its undefeated start to the season with a 1-0 win over Point Park Wednesday in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Led by junior goalkeeper John Lichina, who recorded his fourth consecutive shutout and tied the Allegheny career shutout record with his 17th career shutout, the Gators (5-0) were able to make goal from senior David DelGreco stand to continue their five-game, season-opening winning streak.
DelGreco scored his second goal of the season on a pass down-center from senior Chris Brennan. DelGreco put the shot to the bottom left side of the net to put the Gators ahead in the 72nd minute. DelGreco was the team-leader in goals in the 2011 season, scoring six. DelGreco found the back of the net for the first time since a 3-0 win over Wilmington on Sept. 2.
With Wednesday night's assist, Brennan currently leads the team in points with seven, scoring two goals and recording three assists.
Allegheny had a majority of the opportunities during the game, taking five corner kicks during the game while taking seven shots in the second half.
Lichina ties the record of 17 career shutouts by Ryan Larkin, who started between the pipes for the Gators during the '06 and '07 seasons. Lichina finished last season with six shutouts after collecting seven during his first season for the Blue and Gold.
Allegheny ends its three-game road trip on Sept. 15 against nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon at 1 p.m. The Tartans are ranked No. 7 in the latest edition of the NSCAA poll, released on Sept. 11. After meeting with Carnegie Mellon, the Gators will return home for non-conference matchups with Baldwin-Wallace (Sept. 18) and Mount Union (Sept. 22).
