Long Captures 150th Career Win in Wentworth's 4-0 Win Over Eastern Nazarene
BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Aaron Mackey (Windham, N.H.) scored a pair of goals and classmates Jake Buzzell (Haverhill, Mass.) and Matt Racca (Wakefield, R.I.) each added a pair of assists as the Wentworth men's soccer team snapped a 10-match winless streak with a 4-0 win over Eastern Nazarene in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field. The win was the 150th for veteran head coach Bob Long.
Wentworth, which had been 0-8-2 since defeating Curry, 1-0, last October 13, got the only goal it would need 8:39 into the contest when Buzzell served a corner kick from the left side to Mackey, who flicked the ball past Lion sophomore keeper Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.). The goal was just the leopards' second of the season and the first in the last 228:39.
The game remained 1-0 until Racca found Mackey, who one-timed a shot just inside the left post at 53:47. Buzzell assisted on sophomore Adam Rhodes' (Litchfield, Conn.) goal at 64:43 after serving a corner kick from the right side into the box. Sophomore Daniel Cubelli (Norwood, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Black & Gold when he took a feed from Racca and buried a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.
Senior John Longo (Needham, Mass.) made five saves for Wentworth, while Johnson turned aside three shots for Eastern Nazarene. The Lions held a slim, 17-16 shot advantage, while the Leopards had an 8-3 advantage on corners.
Long, who is in his 16th season as the Leopards' head coach, improves to 150-121-14 during his tenure and will guide the Leopards (1-4-1, 1-0-0 CCC) in their next game – a week from today at Curry. Eastern Nazarene dropped its third straight to fall to 2-4-0 (0-3-0) and is at Regis on Monday.
