Four Captains Score as CNU Cruises Past Ferrum, 4-0
FERRUM, Va. -- Senior Sean Moriarty scored the gamewinning goal in the first half and the Christopher Newport offense ripped off three more goals in the second stanza to pull away with a 4-0 win in conference action today, dropping the Ferrum Panthers (3-3-1, 0-1-1). CNU improves to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the USA South.
Opportunities were limited in the first half, as both teams were strong defensively early. The Captains defense of Brendan Cook, Alec Faulkner, Caleb Baker and Tommy O'Neal did not allow the Panthers attack to take a single shot in the frame, while the CNU offense was held to just three.
CNU, however, made them count, putting all three on-frame including Moriarty's tally in the 26th minute of action. Sophomore Jalon Brown crossed the ball in front of the goal where the senior defender knocked in the score. The goal was the eighth of his career for the defensive player and fourth gamewinner.
After halftime, Christopher Newport quickly turned a one-goal advantage into a bigger lead. The Captains scored two in the first 20 minutes of the half, including a score less than five minutes in. Seniors Denny Arinello and Andrew Bonorden combined on the early goal, as Bonorden put away a beautiful cross.
In the 65th minute, senior T.J. Byrd slipped a pass beyond the defense to junior Alex Makumbi who won the foot race and put a hard shot on frame for his first score of the season. Finally, rookie Hunter Harnett added an unassisted score late in the game for his second goal of the year and the final tally of 4-0.
The Captains defense continued their stellar showing on the day, allowing just three shots to the Ferrum offense all game. Junior Sean Killion faced just one shot on-goal and he turned it away to ensure the clean sheet, the second shutout of his career.
CNU has just one more game remaining in the early season five-game road trip, as they will head to Lynchburg College for a 7:00 pm game on Wednesday, Sept 19. CNU will then return home next weekend to take on Maryville College (9/22 at 3:00 pm).
