Men’s Soccer Completes Sweep of California

More news about: Southwestern men's team

REDLANDS, Calif. - With a 2-1 win over Redlands College on Sunday afternoon the Pirate Men's soccer team made it a clean sweep in California this weekend. The win improves SU to 5-3 on the year.

The high tempo game was evident early on as the teams raced from one side of the field to the other, launching attacks on the opposing team's defense. Redlands got the first fruitful attack with a goal in the 31st minute by Alex Laughton, assisted by Nick Eary to give Redlands a 1-0 lead.

Southwestern settled in and continued to pressure the Redlands and it paid off just before halftime. Marco Alcocer, assisted by Evan Perkins, to send SU into the break tied 1-1 despite being outshot in the frame.

The Pirates came out strong in the second half, earning two corner kicks and getting two great looks at goal, spelling impending doom for the Bulldogs. All the hard work finally paid off as Charlie Berndt, assisted by Zach Faulkner, put in the game winner in the 68th minute.

Redlands came back aggressively, but SU's defense remained strong and was impenetrable, as they had been nearly all game, and pushed the Pirates to the 2-1 final.

Southwestern trailed in the shot count 25-14 and corner kicks 9-4. Daniel Poole had another big game in goal, recording five saves on the afternoon.

With a two-game winning streak Southwestern returns home to open SCAC conference action this weekend. They face Colorado College on Friday night at 7 p.m.
