LOS ANGELES— Daniel Watson (San Francisco) was named the SCIAC Male Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after scoring the game-winning goal in the Occidental College men's soccer team's 2-1 upset of No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
Connor Freeman(Mercer Island, Wash.) got fouled just outside of the CMS box, setting up a free kick for Watson and the Tigers (2-1, 1-1 SCIAC) in the 23rd minute. Watson drilled a shot, that caromed off of the Stags' wall, and into the upper right corner of the net for the decisive goal.
The Tigers held on for the rest of the game to knock off the No. 2 ranked team in the West Region.
Watson is the first Oxy student-athlete to win the weekly award this school year and the first to win it since women's basketball player Makenzie Brandon (Seattle) won it in January.
SCIAC Sports Information Directors nominate and vote for the male and female student-athlete awards on Monday and the winners are typically released Tuesday afternoon.
