Pella, Iowa, Sept. 11, 2012 - A strong defensive effort and a pair of second-half goals gave the No. 18-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team a 2-0 win at Central College on Tuesday afternoon.

After a slow first half in which they were outshot 10-5, the Bears showed a much more aggressive offensive attack throughout the second half. Both teams remained scoreless until the 59th minute when freshman forward Connor Roach scored his second game-winning goal of the season, unassisted, to give Washington U. a 1-0 lead.

The Bears kept up their offensive attack following Roach's goal. In the 72nd minute, junior midfielder Michael Flowers took a pass from sophomore forward Chris Haeberle and fired the ball to the back corner of the net from the middle of the field just outside the box to put the Bears ahead 2-0.

The Washington U. defense played solid throughout the match, and turned up the intensity in the second half, holding Central to just three shots in the period, with the last coming in the 63rd minute. Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson recorded five saves while picking up his third shutout of the season in goal for the Bears.

Washington University (3-0-1) continues its three-match roadtrip by traveling to Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Bears are scheduled to take on Rhodes College at Noon.
