CNU Drops Maryville in USA South Action, 2-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the first USA South Athletic Conference matchup between Christopher Newport and Maryville College, it was CNU that cruised to a clean sheet over the Scots, winning 2-0. Sophomore leading scorer Jalon Brown scored his third gamewinner of the year and added an assist on the second goal later in the game.

Maryville joined the conference in 2012-13 and today's game will be the first and last time the two teams will play in conference action, as CNU will be headed to the Capital Athletic Conference in 2013.

The Captains offense dominated the game in the first half, scoring a pair of goals on 11 shots, putting an impressive seven on-frame. Meanwhile, the CNU defense did not allow a single shot in the first half by Maryville.

Brown got the Captains on the board right out of the gates, scoring just 3:52 into the contest. Junior midfielder Caleb Lewis slipped a pass through the middle of the defense on the left side of the box and Brown blasted a drive into the twine on the left side. The score was his fifth of the year and second straight game-winning goal.

CNU added a second goal in the first half on a nifty combination play off the end line. Senior midfielder Denny Arinello blew past his defender on the goal line and turned a pass back toward the middle. Brown spun in mid-air to touch a pass back to senior Andrew Bonorden, who crushed a hard one-timer to the left of the goal.

Reigning defensive player of the week Ben Munger made 10 saves in goal for Maryville, but was forced to face 21 CNU shots in the game, including 12 on-goal. CNU keeper Sean Killion made four saves, all in the second half, to lock up the shutout.

Killion made a terrific save just five minutes into the second stanza when Maryville put together a solid fast-break opportunity. In transition, Conner McCarty touched a pass to Patrick Braxton on the left side. Braxton was beyond his defender and cracked a hard shot, but Killion had rushed out to make the stop in the middle of the box.

The Captains improved to 5-1-2 overall this season, including a 2-0-1 mark in conference play. CNU is unbeaten in their last six games, heading into a Wednesday night tilt against St. Mary's College (Md.) at home. That game will kickoff at 7:00 pm with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com
