Matthew Mbamelu Scores Two Goals as Beavers Down Bloodhounds for First CUNYAC Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Led by Matthew Mbamelu, the City College of New York got off to a quick start as the sophomore scored one of his two goals in the 1:56th minute of the game in the Beavers' 2-0 shutout victory over City University of New York Athletic Conference Foe John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Wednesday afternoon on the grass field at Purchase College.

The Beavers improved to 2-5-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in CUNYAC play while the Bloodhounds fell to 2-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in conference play.

M. Mbamelu scored his third goal of the season in the 1:56 minute of the contest on a penalty kick. The goal was his second penalty kick goal of the 2012 campaign and gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

M. Mbamelu added his second goal of the game on a break-away pass from Fanhor Sanchez and Felipe Maidana, respectively, to give CCNY a 2-0 advantage in the 27th minute of the game.

Goalkeeper and reigning CUNYAC/Applebee's Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week Danny Hernandez posted the first shutout of his collegiate career, picking up nine saves.

The Beavers continue CUNYAC play on Saturday, Sept. 29 as CCNY hosts Lehman College at 9:30 AM at Randall's Island Field 90.
