Baruch Notches 1st CUNYAC Win, Defeat Staten Island 2-1
The Baruch College Bearcats recorded their first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win of the season by defeating the College of Staten Island, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, but the visiting Bearcats (2-4-3, 1-0-2, 5 pts CUNYAC) opened the scoring in the 55th minute of play.
Akil Georgestole a pass at midfield and sent a chip pass over the defense to a charging Vincent Cruz, who beat the goalkeeper for the first score.
Staten Island (5-6, 1-1, 3pts CUNYAC) tied the match in the 68th minute as Nedgy Nazon scored off a rebound.
However, the tie did not last long as 38 seconds later Cruz scored again off another assist from George to put the Bearcats ahead, 2-1. The defense hung on in the end to record their first important victory of the conference schedule.
Staten Island outshot the Bearcats, 22-8, but Peter DiBonawas outstanding in goal by recording a career-high 13 saves.
Baruch will return to action on Saturday, September 29, with a CUNYAC home contest against the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College. Kick off at the Met Oval is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
