Stecyk Scores Two; Men’s Soccer Wins 4-0
HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 26, 2012) – Junior Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.) claimed the first two scores and freshman Joe Cellitti (Mendham, N.J.) added his first collegiate goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team blew by the Blue Jays of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University 4-0 on Wednesday. Stephen Dunbar (Johns Creek, Ga.) scored the other goal of the evening as the Ducks moved to 7-2 on the year.
Stevens dominated the match, outshooting the visitors 28-3 on the night. Junior goalkeeper Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) made three saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year for the Ducks.
Stecyk scored 11 minutes into the game on a play that began with a corner kick. The ball was played by Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.), who sent it over to Stecyk who buried it for the early Stevens advantage. Though the Ducks played well over the rest of the period, it was the only goal on the board as the teams went to halftime.
Nearly 20 minutes into the next half, a hard rebound caromed to Stecyk in front. The Colorado native sent a missile hard and low into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Celletti had a big role in the last two goals of the night. With five minutes left, the freshman made a great crossing pass and hit Dunbar for the score. Two and a half minutes later, Cellitti was the beneficiary of a Santiago Cabrera (Caracas, Venezuela) pass to the six-meter line that was simple to convert and made the final score 4-0.
Numerous other Ducks had scoring opportunities in the match, none better than junior Edward Rupp (Sayville, N.Y.), who had his best effort redirected enough so that the ball hit the post instead of the twine at 14:39.
The Ducks will be back in action on Saturday with an Empire 8 trip to Nazareth College at 1 p.m.
