Medaille Men Score Late to Upend Houghton in Non-Conference Play
BUFFALO, NY-The Medaille men's soccer team played host to Houghton College Thursday night and after a physical contest, the Mavericks squeaked away with a (1-0) victory.
Throughout most of the game, both teams were limited with their chances due to solid defense on both sides. After the first half, the Mavericks had six total shots while the Highlanders totaled three shots. The second quarter was much more active for both teams. The Mavericks totaled ten total shots while the Highlanders finished the half with six shots.
The lone goal of the game came off a throw in from John L. Smith with just under ten minutes to go in the second half. His throw in came directly in front of the net and George Tor headed the ball into the left hand corner of the net. While the Highlanders had a few chances late in the game, goalie Nick Kurtz prevented them from tying the game.
The Mavericks played smart in the game but very physical as well. It caused the Highlanders to pick up four yellow cards in the game while the Mavericks didn't receive any.
On Saturday, the Mavericks head to Franciscan University to take on the Barons at 3:00 p.m. as they continue conference play. The Mavericks will be home again on October 6th as they take on the Mount Aloysius Mounties at 6:30 p.m.
