Two late goals help Duhawks escape the clutches of the Thunder

More news about: Loras men's team

Both teams came out flying and showcasing their speed from back line to front line. The match closely resembled a ping pong match rather that a soccer match with how fast the teams were countering each other. However it would take until the 84th minute for Loras to break through the stifling Wheaton defensive line.

Senior Brad Joiner would be the final piece to the puzzle after a tremendous team effort to not only keep the play alive, but also to find Joiner alone just outside the six yard line for the goal. It all started when the ball was cleared back to senior Malcolm Calbert who then sent a curving pass up to sophomore Tom Fluegel. Fluegel had to bust his hump to reach the pass and push the ball up to sophomore Johnny Rummelhart. After losing the ball once to Wheaton, Rummelhart stripped it back and crossed it into senior Ryan Schneider who had his shot bang off the crossbar and fall to Joiner, who blasted it home for the goal.

Loras would take advantage of the desperate Wheaton team and they would add a second goal by the feet of Rummelhart to make it 2-0. Joiner added an assist on the play with a perfect pass to Rummelhart who was waiting all alone just inside the 18.

The Duhawks will travel to Decorah on Saturday to take on the Luther College Norse in the second day of Iowa Conference play. Luther owns a 5-2-2 record and dropped their IIAC opener to Central in Pella, Iowa, 1-0.
