St. Lawrence Cruises Past Bard, 5-0
Sep. 29: Five different players scored as the nationally-ranked No. 9 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Bard College, 5-0, in a Liberty League contest on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon. The Saints, who used three second-half goals to put the game away, improved to 9-1 overall this season with a 2-1 mark in the league. The Raptors got fantastic play from goalkeeper Gabe Rudd but fell to 2-8-1, 0-3-0.
Senior captain Sam DeMello opened the scoring just 1:22 into the game with his ninth goal of the season. Junior Andrew Bednarsky dribbled the ball down to the left side of the end line, around his defender and slipped a pass into the box where DeMello one-touched the ball into the right side of the goal to put his team up 1-0.
Two minutes later, Bednarsky played a ball over the Bard defense where Grant had a chance to score, but Rudd made a nice reflex save with his left hand to keep the score at 1-0.
In the sixth minute, senior Will Congdon scored his first goal of the season when he curved a corner kick inside the far post to put the Saints up 2-0. Rudd made several diving saves as he kept the Saints scoreless for the remainder of the stanza with ten first half saves.
Just over ten minutes into the second half, Bednarsky gave the Saints a 3-0 advantage with his first goal of the season. Gilloran passed the ball up to Bednarsky in the middle of the field, who took a touch before drilling the ball into the upper left corner past the hands of an outstretched Rudd.
Gilloran scored his sixth goal of the season in the 60th minute and put the Saints up 4-0 when Congdon dished him a pass from the bottom of the box where he shot the ball past Rudd in the top left corner.
Less than two minutes later, first-year student Seyefe Brouk notched his second goal of the season off a rebound. He tucked a powerful shot into the lower left corner to round out the Saints' scoring at 5-0.
Rudd gave a solid performance in goal for the Raptors, as he finished with 21 saves. First-year student Ryan Roethel and sophomore Aaron Costello split the goalkeeping duties in the Saints' shutout, with Costello being called to make a save in the second half.
St. Lawrence will host St. John Fisher in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 4:00pm.
