LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College men's soccer team placed all six of its shots on goal but couldn't convert and La Verne's Fernando Almejo connected for the game's only goal, giving the Leopards (5-5-1, 3-4 SCIAC) a 1-0 win on Saturday.

In the 35th minute, Almejo, who had three of La Verne's five shots, headed in a cross from Abdullah Alharshan for the game-winning score.

Ben Murray (Sandpoint, Idaho), Reid Sakamoto (Honolulu), Jack Day (London, England), Marcus Brandford (Seattle), John Richardson (Palo Alto) and Michael Tonetti (Las Vegas) all had chances for Oxy that were saved by ULV goalkeeper Jonathyn Lometti.

Oxy goalie Tristan Cooper (Freemont, N.H.) made a pair of saves for the Tigers.

Oxy (4-4, 3-4 SCIAC) remains bunched up in the middle of the SCIAC standings, within striking distance, six points behind first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and three points back of Whittier for the fourth SCIAC playoff spot.

The Tigers return home to play Chapman on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Lower Field.
