Last Second OT Goal Sinks Medaille Men
ERIE, PA - The Medaille men's soccer team seemingly had the game wrapped up against archrival Penn State-Behrend as they held a two goal advantage with nine minutes remaining. However, a furious comeback, capped by a goal as time expired in overtime, led to a heartbreaking (3-2) loss for the Mavs.
The Mavs opened up the scoring in the 27th minute when John Taggart tallied his third goal of the season as he bent a shot into the left side of the net from the end line to give Medaille a (1-0) lead. They would carry that lead into halftime. The Mavs would tally once again in the 56th minute when Pablo Ordonez guided a direct kick through the defense for an unassisted tally that stretched the Medaille lead to (2-0).
The Mavs held that advantage until the 81st minute when Behrend netted a header off a cross to cut the Medaille lead in half. In the 86th minute the Lions tallied the equalizer when Eric Vunovic beat his defender and deposited the ball in the lower left protion of the net. The Lions had grabbed the momentum and headed into overtime.
In the first extra session the game seemed destined for double overtime but a dangerous cross was volleyed into the net as time expired that gave Penn State-Behrend the critical AMCC victory. The loss was the first in conference play for Medaille as they fell to (3-1-0) and (10-2-0) overall. They will look to get back on track when they host Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday (10/6) at 6:30pm at All High Stadium.
